Blog question - August 30th

You will set some goals for the editing unit. Take a moment to determine three goals that you'd like to make that you can complete by the end of the editing unit. What are these three goals? Why have you chosen them?

Three goals that I'd like to complete by the end of the editing unit are:
1. Edit a video project that I contributed to (whether that be acting, filming, etc.)
2. Figure out my own editing style
3. Learn how to use all the tools on adobe premiere properly, and try to experiment with them

I chose these goals because I want to grow comfortable using the editing program while also enjoying the creative process behind editing. I really like editing videos so I'm excited to learn how to use adobe premiere and I think it'll be interesting to see all the effects and tools you can experiment with, since I've only ever edited on my phone.

Blog Question - August 29th

What are three key points from this video on how to craft your resume? Why are they important?

Three key points on crafting your resume are to include any experiences involving work that you may have (Even if they are informal or volunteer positions), list any achievements/awards you may have gotten, and make sure to keep everything as short concise as possible (You should not have any full sentences/paragraphs). These are all important to include on your resume because they show your employer if you have any skills/experiences that they may be looking for when hiring. By keeping your resume concise, it allows your employer to be able to quickly skim through it to determine whether or not you're a worthy candidate.

What are three key things that you learned in these units on the following topics:

Set Safety/Etiquette : Always be aware of your surroundings and identify potential dangers, always be prepared for unexpected problems and situations, and never risk your safety for a shot. If you're unsure whether or not something is safe, ask!

Career Readiness: Always remember to apply the 4 C's on a set (Communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity), Early = on time, on time = late, late = fired, and dress for the job you want (professional attire).

Digital Citizenship: Follow the "golden rule", never email personal/credit card info, and make sure to double-check your writing for any grammar/spelling mistakes

Copyright: Copyright is the Exclusive legal right given to the creator to authorize others to use their work (film, print, publish, perform, etc.), the Digital Millennium Copyright Act applies copyright laws to digital media, and in order to use someone's work, you must verify that you're using it under fair use laws (criticism, commentary, parody, news reporting, art, scholarships, research, time shifting, asking permission of the creator)

How can you begin using this going forward? Why are they important to know?

I believe I will be using these methods throughout my career, but I will definitely be applying this on future projects for this class. These key points are important to remember because they can impress your future employers and also protect you from potentially being fired in the workplace.

Explain the concept of fair use in your own words? How do you think you can you apply fair use to you work that you create in this class?

Fair use is when you use a small portion of a work for your own use, but it only applies when you're using it for schoolwork, news reporting, criticizing or commenting, and comedy or parodies. I feel like we will apply fair use in many projects, such as our sweded trailers and parody music videos. I can apply fair use by giving new meaning to a song, for example for my parody music video, I could probably change the lyrics to make it original to me, but still use the instrumental for the background music.

How are music and copyright used on Youtube? How can you properly use a song in your video?

Copyright is used by artists/holders to control how they want their songs to be used on Youtube. To use a song in your video, you need to have an official music license. You can also use the youtube music library or use third-party services to purchase music that won't give you claims.

What does this video have to say about screen time's effect? Based on the video, reflect on your own screen time habits. How do they compare to the suggestions and concerns raised, and what changes (if any) would you consider making to manage your screen time more effectively?

The video talks about how having a higher screen-time can affect our physical and mental health. We become more irritable, we lose sleep, and we become addicted to the dopamine our screens give us. Personally, I definitely lose sleep when I have access to my phone at night. I can also tell that my attention span has gotten shorter. To change my bad screen-time habits, I should choose a different activity other than using my phone before bed. I could also set up controls to limit how many hours and minutes I spend on each app everyday.

Do you feel the internet is making people meaner? What might be some examples of this in our current world? Why do you feel this way?

I feel like the internet is making people meaner mainly because of anonymity and the lack of social cues. There are many examples currently, especially on platforms like Tiktok where it's easy to access other peoples content and leave a comment. It's easier to judge someone based off a short clip/post without considering who they may be outside of social media. I feel this way because sometimes I find myself subconsciously making judgements about people I see online, but I usually catch myself before I feel the need to comment about it.

What age do you think is appropriate to start social media for kids? What are the advantages and/or risks to that age? Why do you feel this way?

I believe the appropriate age to start social media is 14 and up. There are some benefits at starting social media at a young age, because it allows you to connect with others that may have the same interests as you. It allows you to build community and share about causes you might be passionate about. There are always risks such as cyber-bullying and having your information leaked as well, but I believe that as long as you don't share any personal information, social media can be a helpful tool and help you discover more about yourself.

Now that you've completed the set safety and etiquette lecture, why is it so important? What parts of it do you think will be difficult to follow? What parts would you like to learn more about?
Set safety and etiquette is important because it allows for a safe and efficient set. If everybody follows the rules for safety and etiquette, less accidents are going to occur and more progress to the film will be made. For me personally, I think it might be hard to remember the rules of etiquette because it might be hard to keep my opinions to myself. I'd like to know more about the proper handling of tools (such as lighting, sound equipment, etc.) so I can feel more confident in my skills if I were to become a PA.

What are three key points this article makes on etiquette on set.

When it comes to set etiquette, it's important to be respectful, responsible, and reliable. When talking to superiors, always be polite and considerate. Always be aware of your surroundings and if you're not sure whether or not your allowed to do something, always ask. Also, making sure that your superiors have everything they need leaves a good impression and gives you a better chance at being rehired. It's also important to be responsible for your duties and to always keep yourself busy, because there is always tasks to complete on set. While fulfilling your duties, make sure that you're doing them as safely as possible and that you communicate it to your superiors. It is important to do things correctly and efficiently because it shows others that you're reliable.

What are 3 different points this article makes about safety on set? Why are they important?
This article highlights how important it is to have a plan for safety protocol and an emergency response. Making sure you have a plan for any scenario before you begin filming ensures that everyone involved is safe and prepared for any unexpected problems that may arise. It is also important to make sure that any hazards are displayed and that the set is clean organized to prevent any possible injuries or accidents from occurring. Safety is the #1 priority on set and no shot is worth your life!

Why is vertical video a bad idea? Have you taken one? Why?

Vertical videos make it harder for audiences to watch videos. Unlike a picture, you can't always turn a video sideways to make it easier to watch. If vertical videos were to become more common, we would have to adapt everything to fit that format; filming vertically, thinking of ways to fit everything in a vertical shot, and even changing our screens to fit vertical formatting, are all possible things that would change.

To begin the year, set three goals for yourself in this class. You will reflect back on this in December to see how you have performed. Try to set realistic, achievable goals that you can fulfill by the end of May in this course.

1. I want to try every "job" or "role", whether that be editing, filming, acting, etc. at least once.

2. I want to find my specialty in film production

3. I want to contribute to the idea or script of a video and help my vision come to life.

Why are movies so magical?  Why are they special to you?

I think movies are so magical because they give people a medium to express their imaginations and use their creativity. To me, movies are special because they give filmmakers an opportunity to convey their emotions through actions and sounds that may be hard to show through other art forms. The messages in movies can be understood universally, no matter what culture or language they may be in, and that makes them stand out to me.
